Teaching method

As a classically-trained pianist, I offer solid coaching for my students, both technically and musically. I believe in adapting to the students’ needs and abilities, and gently push them to reach their maximum potential. I encourage a balanced approach which includes technique (scales, triads, arpeggios), sight-reading, and ear-training, in addition to musical repertoire.

Unless students choose otherwise, I use the Royal Conservatory of Toronto method, a graded system that follows a well-balanced, and internationally recognized curriculum. (Students may choose whether to take the RCM exams or not.) I believe in peer motivation and that success really does breed success!

Testimonials

“I have two sons who had lost interest in pursuing any further their piano lessons. I am pleased to report that with Susan's exceptional patience, talent, and dedication, my sons have re-discovered this beautiful instrument. She was attentive to their needs and selected pieces to amuse and inspire their senses, all the while teaching them new skills and setting new objectives. My sons appreciated her constructive criticism and gentle guidance! She set realistic and attainable goals for each child.” -- Tania Kia, Montreal

"Professor Toman takes advantage of her students' best capabilities and challenges them with materials and thrills that will make them go further in their piano learning"

-- Alfonso Andrade-Franco, Montreal
